Environmental Hero
Rick McIntyre

We proudly honor Rick McIntyre as our Environmental Hero for this quarter! Renowned for his expertise in studying and writing about wolves, Rick's dedication to observing these magnificent creatures spans more than four decades.

During our interview with Rick, he told us how wolf packs operate a little like human families. He shared a great story about Wolf 8, who had a difficult life. Rick said Wolf 8 started as the runt of the litter, with a dull greyish coat - almost more like a coyote. His three brothers all had beautiful black coats. Rick said Wolf 8 was bullied and picked on by his brothers. One day, Wolf 8 and two of his brothers were out looking for food and one of the brothers came upon an elk that had been killed by a bear. The grizzly chased the wolves away, but Wolf 8 turned around and stood up to the bear! The bear actually stopped chasing the wolves and turned around to go back to the elk. Wolf 8 later went on to be a leader of a famous pack. Rick tells more stories about the lives of wolves in the books he has written: The Rise of Wolf 8, The Reign of Wolf 21, The Redemption of Wolf 302, and The Alpha Female Wolf

Stories We Have Been Following

Grizzly 399 and Her Beautiful Cub

This is Grizzly 399 with her new cub!  Many of us weren't sure she would come out of hibernation due to her age. But not only did she come out, but she brought a beautiful COY (Cub of the Year) with her!  At 27 years old, she is the oldest recorded wild grizzly bear momma, with 18 cubs over the years. Her last litter, in 2020, was quadruplets!

In the Green Kids Club books about Grizzly 399, we tell her story, and we have had the honor to feature pictures from renowned photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen. Recently, Mangelsen authored an article for The Mountain Journal, sharing captivating insights into 399's endearing interaction with her adorable new cub. In his article, Mangelsen marvels at the undivided attention and playfulness that 399 bestows upon her single offspring, who enjoys the luxury of not having to contend with siblings. Notably, 399's previous litter in 2020 comprised quadruplets. Mangelsen has also captured breathtaking photographs of 399 and her new cub together. Coral Reefs

This month we celebrate Coral Reef Awareness Week. Climate change is making the oceans warmer and many coral reefs have been negatively impacted. One estimate is that up to 90% of the coral reefs will die off completely in the next 25 years. To combat this, several organizations, including Grass Roots Belize, whom we work are creating coral nurseries to try to save the species.  Watch the video here!
