Environmental Hero
Leslie Weinstein

Our environmental hero this quarter is the inspiring Leslie Weinstein, the founder of Turtles Fly Too. This organization helps rescue sea turtles - and occasionally other aquatic animals as well - by flying them to locations where they can be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. Hundreds of sea turtles have needed rescue the past few years because they were caught off guard as colder water moved in to the Atlantic Ocean before they had time to migrate south. Turtles, like all reptiles, are exothermic. They get their body heat from the environment around them. When they get too cold too fast, they experience hypothermia, often called "cold-stunning." This renders them unable to move and without help they will die.

Click here to read about how Turtles Fly Too helps with cold-stunned turtles,  or click here to watch our video interview!  Last year alone, Turtles Fly Too flew 385 turtles to warmer places to help in their rehabilitation! Way to go Leslie and crew!

Stories We Have Been Following

Grizzly 399 and More Cubs?

Even though the first grizzly to come out of hibernation in the Yellowstone Park area was spotted more than a month ago, there is no sign of Grizzly 399 yet. If she emerges with cubs this year, she is set to break a record as the oldest grizzly bear to give birth in the wild. “We looked it up, and from what I’m finding, the oldest known age of actual reproduction is 25,” Interagency Grizzly Bear Study Team leader Frank van Manen said. Grizzly 399 is 27 years old. She has produced at least 7 litters, with 24 cubs to her name. She most recently made history in 2020 when she emerged with quadruplets. We are excitedly waiting and watching for her!

How many cubs do you think she'll have?  Send your prediction with a date when you think she'll emerge.  Whoever is the closest - will win a plush toy and Grizzly 399 book!  Send to contactus@greenkidsclub.com with the subject - Grizzly 399 Prediction.
April is Animal Cruelty Prevention Month

Green Kids Club, and it's non-profit sister organization, Love the Wild were founded to provide education about animals and their habitats, and how they interact with humans in an increasingly changing world. We support and closely work with numerous groups actively working to prevent animals from being abused or killed. Thank you to all the individuals and organizations who are dedicated to making the world a better place for animals of all kinds. We encourage all of you to actively work for this cause!  In this photo, I am with little Molelo when he was a baby - under the care of the amazing Elephants without Borders!

The Jumbo Troops

In honor of Save the Elephant Day on April 16, we have highlighted the Jumbo Troops this month. The Jumbo Troops is affiliated with a group near and dear to our heart here at Green Kids Club - Save Elephant Foundation. They are a non-profit organization that aims to protect elephants dealing with human encroachment in communities across the Terai region in Nepal, India. The habitat for these mighty giants has shrunk considerably and human-animal conflict is occurring everywhere. Follow them and their work on Instagram at thejumbotroops and learn how you can support their efforts.  See one of their videos on Instagram.
