What's New with Books!
One more sneak preview of our newest Grizzly 399 story with beautiful art from talented Morgan Spicer. This is a continuation to the story of Grizzly 399 and the last year with her 4 hungry cubs.  This particular illustration shows the cubs leaving the den after hibernation!  As you can see Hungry is Hungry!  Our book follows the adventures 399 had in the summer of 2021 and what it took for her to get all 5 of them fed.  At the end of this book, we highlight what needs to be done to ensure the bears located in the Teton Park area are kept safe from what we as humans have done, to impact their lives. We will send out a note for pre-orders soon!

Green Kids News
I was fortunate enough to get this photo while in Yellowstone a few weeks ago. The wolf you see in this photo was part of the Wapiti pack located in the northern part of the park.  I also was excited to be meeting Rick McIntyre, a famous wolf expert who has been watching and observing wolves for many years!  Rick's valuable insight from this work has brought a significant amount of information and data to the park about the lives of wolves.  He first started logging sightings, after wolves were introduced into the park in May of 1995.  Since then he has recorded over 100,000 wolf sightings.  After he retired from working at Yellowstone Park, he began writing books about the lives of these amazing animals. He has authored The Rise of Wolf 8: Witnessing the Triumph of Yellowstone's Underdog, The Reign of Wolf 21: The Saga of Yellowstone's Legendary Druid Pack, and the Redemption of Wolf 302:  From  Renegade to Yellowstone Alpha Male

These stories are very important because wolves desperately need federal protection from extreme and cruel wolf-killing laws recently enacted in the states of Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming. These laws are destroying the state’s wolf populations, undoing years of progress in wolf conservation. This story from the Washington Post describes what is happening to our wolves of Yellowstone.   If you get a chance please take a few minutes to read this article. Our park and the surrounding area have lost about 85 wolves to hunters this year and one entire pack has been decimated. Something needs to be done to stop this or our wolves will be gone soon.

This is one of the books written by Rick. It is an amazing story - Amazon.

Green Kids now has been licensed by Ameba TV, where they have children's content for shows and books. Our story about Molelo, the Fire Elephant is available to hear as a read. They did an excellent job.  Hope you enjoy it and learn about Molelo's journey to survive a horrific fire started by poachers.  To listen to it go here!

Environmental Hero
We are pleased to announce Ian Michler from Blood Lions as our environmental hero (see our webpage) for this quarter.  Ian has made a significant difference in ending lion farming and the commercial exploitation of this species in South Africa.  He is the lead character, researcher, and co-campaign leader of the award-winning documentary Blood Lions

According to Ian, there could be as many as 12,000 lions in captivity in private facilities throughout the country.  In some of these captive-breeding facilities, tourists pay to pet, bottle-feed, and take selfies with lions cubs.  Often, once the cubs grow up they are sold to hunting facilities where they are shot by trophy hunters in "canned" hunts held in fenced areas.  The skins and heads are kept by the hunters, and their bones are often exported to Asia for use in traditional medicines.  These lions lead a miserable and inhumane life.

This documentary has helped to shed light to these abhorrent practices, and public outcry has influenced the South African government to end the captive lion breeding industry in this country.  Now its time to see if they actually do this.  Listen to the Q&A’s with Ian on what is happening right now.

Thank You Ian for making a difference!!!

What We're Following...
Bear Proof Garbage Cans May be a Requirement in Jackson, Wyoming!

Grizzly 399 is sleeping with her babies right now (at least we believe she is).  She normally comes out of hibernation around the end of April or maybe even as early as end of March.  This year will be different since she will be moving her 4 cubs on to go on their own. Grizzly 399 has done an amazing job taking care of 4 cubs and making sure they survive to be able to go out on their own. She is amazing!  But last year she started getting into some trouble as she found herself around people eating foods people have been leaving out. Part of the problem are garbage cans that are not bear proof.  Last week, the Jackson City Council had a meeting and it looks like a requirement may go in for residents to use bear proof containers.  Keep your fingers crossed and prayers said!  If this is done - it will save many bears from becoming habituated and possibly euthanized.
Fundraiser for Elephants Without Borders Elephant Orphanage

Please help us with our virtual fundraiser to benefit our friends at Elephants Without Borders (EWB). The beautiful tote bag features a photo of Molelo and Tuli who was part of his elephant family. All proceeds will go directly to the work that EWB is doing for elephant conservation in Botswana.  From our last newsletter, we broke the news that Molelo has passed away, but the remainder of the elephant herd still needs our help and support.

Lolita - World Wildlife Day
The Fate of Lolita the Orca

We would like to bring attention to an issue we recently found out about from Phil Fairclough, an amazing film producer who makes documentaries about animals and their lives.

He told me about an orca named Lolita, who has been living in a small 35 foot wide tank at the Miami Seaquarium.  When she was 4 years old she was taken from her mother in the Puget Sound and brought to Miami.  She has lived in a tank at the Seaquarium for 50 years alone.  Her sole purpose in life turned into entertainment for us.  How can this be right?  Over the years there have been many people trying to get her released and put back into the wild.  But as I was writing this article for our newsletter I received some wonderful news that the new owners of Miami Seaquarium have retired Lolita.

https://miami.cbslocal.com/2022/03/05/lolita-no-display-miami-seaquarium/

So who knows what this actually mean?  Will she be moved to another similar tank set-up?  A sanctuary of sorts?  Or released into free waters?  Many biologists don’t believe she will be able to survive freedom since she has never experienced it and may not be able to fend for herself.  So they are trying to determine where Lolita goes from here.

All wildlife should be able to live in the wild!

Help Animals in Need in Ukraine

We are praying for the people and animals undergoing the horrors of this war.  I have attached an article that tells us what is happening on the ground -  article I have included comes from the International Humane Society a legitimate and well respected organization.

Also the Kyiv Zoo located in Ukraine has animals that can't be transported or moved. According to the New York Post dated March 4, 2022, "roughly 4,000 other animals — including elephants, camels and Ukraine’s only gorilla — remained stuck with just enough food to feed them for 10 more days. For updates on the zoo please go to the Kyiv Zoo Facebook page -  posted on Facebook
