Update on Grizzly 399 Bear Family
Grizzly 399 Cub Euthanized

We are very sad to report that one of the now subadult quadruplet cubs of Grizzly 399 was euthanized by the Wyoming Game & Fish Department. The Game & Fish stated that Grizzly #1057 (as he was referred to) had become habituated.  We wish that the authorities could have tried to relocate the bear and see if this would have been effective in reducing people bear conflicts. After all the work 399 did to ensure her cubs survived - this is what happens. I pray the other cubs do not end up like this.

Environmental Hero (Heroine)
We are so happy to announce that Lek Chailert, founder of Save Elephant Foundation is our Environmental Hero for this quarter.  Lek has helped to save the lives of hundreds of elephants in Asia through her work where she educates elephant owners and helps them to transition their businesses away from having their elephants be ridden, perform for circuses, and other harmful venues.  Lek's work has received international recognition through mainstream media.  She recently was involved with a story called Love and Bananas' - see the trailer - where she teaches us about the plight of the elephant.  Lek is known as the Elephant Whisperer of Thailand.  Thank you Lek for all your wonderful work - go to this link on our homepage to hear our entire interview with Lek!

What We're Following...
Bison are not Pets

I live close to Yellowstone National Park. And every year we hear of incidents where people fall into geysers, fall off cliffs, get mauled by bears, or get gored by bison.  Some of this is by accident - wrong place at the wrong time, unprepared, etc. But some incidents happen out of sheer stupidity or maybe just ignorance (don't know any better).

Summer is barely half over, and we have already had 3 bison goring incidents.  I would say that probably the bison are getting tired of people getting close to them and not respecting their space. The National Park requires that people stay a distance of at least 25 yards away from all large animals including deer, bighorn sheep, and bison.  So, if you go to places where there are wild animals do your homework before you get there and respect their space!

World Orca Day
July 14th is World Orca Day

Our Newsletter is a tad late for this day - but we still celebrate the day of orcas knowing that we will soon have a book out highlighting the story of an orca named Skali.

Saving Skali follows the tragic but ultimately hope-filled story of a young orca who is brutally snatched from her family pod from the ocean off Seattle and sent to perform in a marine circus in Miami. Over the course of 50 years, Jeff, the young hunter, who captured Skali, meets and falls in love with a Native American girl, who teaches him the error of his ways about her tribe’s oneness with nature. Jeff resolves to go and rescue Skali who’s spent 5 decades in a tiny tank in Miami…and return her to her native waters off the Pacific Northwest to be reunited with her family.

Based on a true story written by Phil Fairclough and Sylvia Medina.

Jane Goodall Institute and Roots & Shoots

Green Kids Club would like to do a shout-out to Jane Goodall and all her efforts to protect chimpanzees and spread the word to help save our animals and the world from environmental loss. Jane is considered an ambassador for animals and inspires people to help conserve our natural world. She is the force behind the Jane Goodall Institute and Roots and Shoots which promotes environmental education for children.

I was fortunate enough to be able to go and hear Dr. Goodall in Missoula, Montana a couple of weeks ago. She is one of my inspirations for the environmental work we do with the stories we write!
