June Newsletter

Welcome to the Green Kids Club Newsletter where you can keep up with us each month, learn some new things, and challenge yourself as a true Green Kid ambassador for the planet. Here's what's new this month.

Kabelo

We are excited about our newest book coming out in the next week or two, Kabelo, the Silly Little Rhino. This book is about a baby rhino on a journey to find his dad.  Proceeds from this book will benefit Saving the Survivors and The Rhino Orphanage These organizations work hard to make a difference protecting and caring for rhinos that have been injured due to poaching incidents.

Hibernation Pandemonium

Our newest book out, Grizzly 399 Hibernation Pandemonium, is so much fun!!!! This book teaches children about hibernation and bears!  A percentage of our proceeds goes to The Cougar Fund and to Love the Wild Foundation where we donate to help protect animals, our planet and also provide education to both adults and children.

Molelo tote

We are still having our virtual fundraiser to benefit our friends at Elephants Without Borders (EWB). We have a tote bag featuring a beautiful photo of Molelo and his family. All proceeds will go directly to the work that EWB is doing for elephant conservation in Botswana. Help them by ordering here.

Environmental Hero Dr. Johan Marais

See our latest interview with Environmental Hero, Dr. Johan Marais of Saving the Survivors. Included in our interview are some incredible photos of the frontline work they are doing to help injured animals. Our hats off to Dr. Marais!

Grizzly 399

In May, we had some opportunities to do book readings with several classes including schools in Caldwell, Idaho.  We had several classes hear us read Grizzly 399 and also  A Tail of Three Lions.  If you would like to hear us read these books feel free to hear us on YouTube!

Over the last several months, Green Kids Club, in conjunction with Love the Wild Foundation, presented an on-line class through Inspired Classroom about Grizzly 399.  We had about 30 teams participate in the class and present what they learned by creating a graphic novel. We have so many that came out fabulously; I hope to share more in the coming months. If anyone is interested in participating in this challenge check out our site for more information.

HUGE UPDATE:
A Tail of Three Lions was written to bring attention to the dire situation of lions in South Africa.  Our book was co-authored with Ian Michler, co-campaign leader from Blood Lions. There has been continuous Lion Farming in the country for many years.  At the time we published our book, January 2021 timeframe, there were about 12,000 lions in lion farms. These lions eventually end up in canned hunts or are used for medicinal purposes.  Blood Lions led the charge with other organizations to help stop this horrific practice.  On May 6, 2021 South Africa declared they will end these practices, as summarized in this excerpt. We at Green Kids are so ecstatic to see this happen! We are hoping to have a podcast with Ian Michler giving us an update on the happenings here some time in the near future.

Grizzly Facts

By now I hope that many of you have heard of Grizzly 399, who is currently trying to raise four rambunctious cubs.  She is 25 years old, a ripe old age to become a momma of so many kiddo bears!  We are so excited to have the opportunity to write about her and share her life as it is evolving.  This month's animal facts will be about grizzly bear hibernation!  Did you know that during hibernation, grizzlies (and other bears) do not poop or urinate while they are sleeping? Rather, they recycle it within themselves!  Wow - the ultimate recyclers!  Learn about this and more in our new book, Grizzly 399 Hibernation Pandemonium.

Monthly Challenge

This month's challenge is to help celebrate Pollinator Week! How can you celebrate? Examples include plant for pollinators, reduce pesticide use, keep out invasive species, and get online to learn about bees and butterflies! Without pollinators, there would not be enough food. They are estimated to be responsible for 35% of the world's food crops. Watch this video to learn about world impacts on our bees – by It’s Okay to Be Smart.

Partner Highlight

This month, we would like to highlight a new group we are excited to be working with: Rainforest Partnership. We are looking to potentially write a book with them about rainforest issues later in the year. This group works internationally with communities to help protect the rainforests.  They currently work in 4 tropical ecosystems that are critical for biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation.  For World Rainforest Day, Green Kids (in conjunction with Love the Wild Foundation), will be reading Princess – the true story of an orangutan that was taught sign language by Dr. Gary Shapiro.
