Hi Green Kids!

Welcome to the Green Kids Club Newsletter where you can keep up with the Green Kids Club happenings each month, learn some new things, and challenge yourself as a true Green Kid ambassador for the planet.

What's New at the Green Kids Club

Molelo the Fire Elephant is officially released! The book is based on a true story about a baby elephant that survived a bush fire. When human friends rescue the young elephant, he isn’t so sure about them… or his new home. Will he make new friends? Will he ever like grass better than milk? And will he ever get used to his new name: Molelo?

This book is part of our new series of Baby Animal Environmental Heroes! 50% of the book’s proceeds will go to Elephants Without Borders (http://elephantswithoutborders.org/).

Contest

We're also making changes to our website (www.greenkidsclub.com), so check back to see our progress. We'd love to hear from you! Give us some feedback and be entered to win a copy of Molelo’s new book!

October Celebrations

October is a great time to think about and act on behalf of the world's animals. For example, this month is Bat Appreciation Month! Here are a few other dates to mark on your calendar:

  • October 1 - International Raccoon Appreciation Day
  • October 2 – World Farm Animals Day
  • October 3 – Butterfly and Hummingbird Day
  • October 15-21 – National Wolf Awareness Week
  • October 20 – International Sloth Day
  • October 21 – Reptile Awareness Day

Monthly Challenge

When the seasons change, so do the clothing and shoes that we wear. There are lots of opportunities to reroute unwanted shoes from the trash or landfill. Consider donating shoes that no longer fit or flatter to your local thrift store or to Soles4Souls, which can send your gently used shoes to make a difference in someone’s life around the world. And when your running shoes have really run their last lap, Nike Reuse-A-Shoe can take worn out shoes and recycle them into sport surfaces. Check the links for information on drop-off locations, shipping, and the wonderful impact these organizations have made.

Animal Fact

A wolf’s sense of smell is at least 100 times stronger than a human’s; it can smell prey over 1.5 miles away! A pack of howling wolves can be heard from 6-10 miles away, depending on the terrain.
