November is Manatee Awareness Month and also has these specific observations:

The Latest News

Our newest book, Learning About Elephants, will introduce you to EleFacts, a fun way to learn many things about elephants from people that actually take care of elephants everyday. The book is filled with interesting facts, amusing illustrations, and detailed photographs with the goal of explaining the special place elephants have in our world! Molelo and his friends will relate personally to info in the book as they guide you along. This book was written in collaboration with Elephants Without Borders, and a portion of proceeds will go directly toward that organization.

Jaguar Facts

Jaguars get their day on November 29, so let's take a closer look at these beautiful jungle cats. Jaguars live mostly in the Amazon basin of South America, but are also found in Central America and southern North America. Unlike most cats, they actually don't mind the water and can swim pretty well to catch some dinner there. They've even been known to dip their tails in the water to entice fish to come closer. And when it comes time to eat, jaguars prefer to drag their food to the trees for privacy.

Also, in case you missed it, Little Moyo, is now available! Little Moyo is based on the true story of a young black rhino who lived in Africa with his mother. He was injured when his mother was taken by poachers. With the help of other animals, Little Moyo makes his way to a rhino sanctuary. The humans who help him are from Saving the Survivors, led by Dr. Johan Marais. Proceeds from this book will enable Dr. Johan and his team to help more injured animals in need.

Non-Profit Highlight

November is often a time for politics and local voting, so it's an opportune time to investigate your state's laws regarding animals and the environment. Did you know that 40 states still haven't banned the sale of ivory or other wildlife products? Federal laws help somewhat, but they do not ban intra-state sales. Organizations like Vermont For Wildlife are working to inform the public and pass policies to close loopholes like these and to protect the world's most vulnerable species. Take a few minutes to see if your state could do more, too, and what you can do to help.

Reader Challenge

For many people, November brings to mind harvest time, comfort food, and Thanksgiving meals. But did you know that up to 40% of food in the US is never consumed, and still many Americans don't get enough to eat? Causes of food waste range from "ugly" produce not making the grade for displays in grocery stores to poor planning, over-shopping, and improper storage at home. Food waste is a major problem - filling landfills, using fresh water and energy to make it, and costing us money to buy it in the first place. Here are some ways you can make a change:

  • Support organizations like ReFED that are redirecting surplus food to those in need, pushing better policies on food labels, and informing the public on how to reduce food waste
  • Educate yourself on how to be a better food consumer
  • Sign up for deliveries from places like Imperfect Foods, which fill the gap by providing shoppers with imperfect, but still perfectly usable, foods that stores passed up
  • Shop locally through a CSA (community supported agriculture), Bountiful Baskets, or at farmers markets to get the freshest foods in your area
  • Donate to a local food pantry

And let's not forget about our fishy friends. They may not be as cute or cuddly as other animals, but fish play a critical role in many food chains across the planet. World Fisheries Day, observed on November 21, helps to bring healthy ecosystems and sustainable fish populations to the forefront of the global discussion. And if you are a connoisseur of sushi or fine dining, check out this list of endangered fish before you order.
